But that doesn't mean this is a pedestrian or merely factual account. With so long and fascinating a life story to deal with, Massie wisely concentrates on the facts of the narrative. This is not a breathless hero-worshipping book, but a considered narrative which is, if anything, rather light on psychological interpretation or wondering why the empress took a particular action.
